WINDMILL Palm – Trachycarpus Fortunei

The Windmill Palm is one of the hardiest palm trees available, allowing you to add a splash of tropical flavor to your temperate garden.

2e4999 597b57c36a0e49e1aa4bd55bb9d33f84~mv2It is very cold and hardy and can survive down to 10° Fahrenheit, some studies claim -4°.

It is slow growing and likes well-drained soil. It is considered a small to medium palm in our area, rarely reaching 16 -20 feet.

Its trunk texture is very rough, with persistent leaf bases clasping the stem as layers of coarse fibrous material. The leaves have long petioles which are bare except for two rows of small spines, terminating in a rounded fan of numerous leaflets. The leaves are about 3 feet long, with the stems another 2’ or more…

Trachycarpus fortunei belongs to the Arecaceae (palm) family. The species’ name was given in honor of Robert Fortune, a horticulturist from Scotland.

The Windmill grows well near the ocean since it tolerates salt air.

This palm is relatively free of problems. Diseases are rare. If the soil is not well-drained, root rot can occur.

This palm can be used as a specimen or in a grouping. They make beautiful additions to other palm varieties.

The fruit is not edible.

This tree is not toxic for dogs or cats.
