Rain will be a nice reprieve from the dryness we have been experiencing. But here are a few more pointers for our continued heat…
Tips to consider during this hot summer season!
-
Make sure you have a sufficient layer of mulch in your beds, to hold moisture in.
-
St. Augustine lawns: in order to reduce stress, cut no more than 1/3 of the blade at a time.
-
Everything has needed more water. When you make changes to your irrigation system, monitor for several days up to a couple of weeks. Check plants in the morning.
-
Those with no irrigation system: a good weekly watering when we are in drought conditions will help keep everything healthy, warding off pests and decease.
-
If your Hibiscus is getting too large, only trim 1/4 to 1/3 at a time to reduce stress.
-
Don’t worry if a few leaves start to fall off Oleanders and some trees, it’s normal with the heat; self-preservation. A lot of leaf drops could be too much water.
-
Do not apply heavy portions of fertilizer
Worms! Who knew?
Open tent caterpillar webs in trees, and birds will eat the worms. Worms will not harm healthy trees.
Cut off rolled-up Canna leaves at the base and destroy them, this will get rid of the larva inside.
Spread earthworms in your lawn and beds, they do wonders!
Water Gardens ~ ~ ~
Remove decaying leaves and spent blossoms. Fertilize every 2 weeks.
